Although I am just at the beginning of my senior year, I am realizing how many lasts I am encountering. You may not love the outdoors, but you do love him. Hunting 4 Connections is the brainchild of outdoors woman and executive recruiter, Dana Sacia.
Plus it is adjacent to the Ohio River, so there is fantastic river bottom habitat and plenty of food sources to grow big healthy deer. Likewise, Crawford County also ranks very high each year for giving up big numbers of deer to hunters. Despot said all of Indiana’s FWAs offer good deer hunting, but because of the hunting pressure, large antlered bucks are not common. Even so, he said every year there are a few trophy bucks taken off of these areas.

I guess I’ll just have to accept the fact that, as a gay man, I might have to wait a little longer than other people to find ‘the one.’ I made my bed with Satan and now I must lie in it, alone. After quickly running out of options on Tinder and getting tired of watching the little picture of myself sending out waves of digital pheromones into the abyss, I downloaded the gay ‘dating’ app Grindr. One of the first people I found on Grindr was named ‘Mr. Big,’ but he wasn’t nearly as romantic as his namesake. A second was a recent transplant from a foreign nation, and after I rejected his advances, he told me that I was the reason why American youth were falling behind the Russians and the Chinese.
The Best Time to Hunt Deer No. 3: Scrape Week
But despite my early arrival to the tract of public land I had scouted the day before, and done so much leg work to find, there were already multiple cars in the parking lot. Cruising further down the road, I found another truck on the north end of the property, as well as two more trucks on the east side. After years of public hunting under my belt, I should have known better. So, of course it was going to attract gobs of hunters.
David Miller of Appalachian Range Outdoors is dedicated to finding specific solutions for serious whitetail deer management tailored to the Appalachian Region of the east. In doing so, he has taken a different approach to whitetail mineral sites. Before I start a whitetail mineral site I like to try to determine where my target buck might possibly be bedding during the day. In my opinion, this gives me the best chance of seeing him during daylight hours and ultimately putting an arrow through him. Why will that buck suddenly change his behavior and visit your mineral site during daylight hours? That is the question that needs to be answered long before you drop your minerals in the dirt.
Chief among these is the rut , when bucks—especially mature ones—toss the dawn-and-dusk thing out the window and rise from their beds whenever they feel like it to search for a doe ready to receive their attention. The urge to breed is so strong in bucks in early to mid-November that their crepuscular nature takes a backseat to the need to cover as much ground as possible to find the next available mate. This is why savvy hunters spend as much time in the stand as possible when the calendar dates fall in the “peak breeding” window.
DEER STALKING
If you’re hunting 100,000 acres, or a million, for that matter, you’re hunting deer that might live their whole lives without bumping into a bait pile. I’ve had enough quality hunting, and success, in such places that I actually prefer not to hunt over bait. So, to target feeder-conditioned deer, scout the area and locate travel routes, rubs, and beds, and try your best to set up near those places—without displacing deer. Then you can lie in wait as deer filter to the feeders, and hopefully shoot a good buck. Trust me when I tell you it can be advantageous to hunt deer this way.
The three top properties for harvest are Pigeon River FWA, Jasper-Pulaski FWA and Kingsbury FWA. This is such a hit-n-miss event that I hesitate to include it here but would feel like I was holding out if I didn’t. Every fall, a handful of does come into estrous about a month before the main event, and the chaos these early-cycling deer create is pretty significant.

If you’re stand-hunting by yourself, as opposed to staging drives with a group, one of the keys to capitalizing on deer seeking respite from pressure is the willingness to sit as many hours as possible. There’s literally no telling when a good buck will follow a funnel to his safe spot; he’s as likely to come through at noon as he is at dawn. So the more hours you can hang in a stand or blind, the better your chance of catching a dandy skulking through the timber as he seeks a lay-up spot for the rest of the day. I grew up hunting one of the most heavily-pressured management units in Wisconsin, a state where the firearms opener is a big enough event that some rural school districts close for the week. So I can tell you that the opening-day influx of human activity makes whitetails move, and savvy hunters know how to make the most of it.
Indiana public lands are well managed to provide as much hunting opportunity as possible, and many of the other properties not mentioned are well worth consideration for the next hunt. At the southern tip, Perry County abuts the Ohio River. And, as mentioned earlier, it includes lots of great habitat for deer. The national forest stretches up through other top counties, including Crawford, Lawrence, Orange, Jackson and Monroe.

Today the Winchester Model 94 is built as a standard factory offering through Browning Arms. However, be aware of some rifles built that are called “94” but built under different manufactures. As a second lever-action rifle offering a turn to the Winchester Model 94 is more than appropriate at this time. These rifles are not only offered in those different action lengths but also as takedown rifles for packing latinlove into high country on a horse or backpack. As I shoot this rifle in its predecessor, the Browning A-Bolt I can say that these rifles carry a very smooth action that has been hand-worked at Browning before they go out the door. The model 70 Winchester is a Mauser style bolt action rifle that makes use of a long extractor, push feed bolt action and carries a hinged magazine release versus a blind magazine well.
